Hello hockey fans,
Welcome to my first blog entry as a collegiate ice hockey coach. My name is Josh Herbert and I will be the Head Coach of the "new" club hockey team at the University of Memphis. To give a little background on myself, I am currently the Ticket Operations Manager with the Mississippi RiverKings Professional hockey team. We will be entering our 20th anniversary season in the SPHL (Southern Professional Hockey League).
I am an assistant coach with the Germantown High School Red Devils Hockey team. The high school league, along with the majority of the MYHL (Memphis Youth Hockey League), has played out of the Desoto Civic Center for the past 10 years as have the RiverKings. However, a new rink in Olive Branch is currently being constructed and is projected to be completed around the end of August/beginning of September of this year. A new youth organization called the MAHA (Mid-south Amateur Hockey Association) will be the "new" league in which the majority of players will now play under.
I began my hockey career in Downers Grove, IL just south of Chicago when I was 7 years old. I played for the Downers Grove Huskies, Seven Bridges summer teams, etc. My family and I moved to the Memphis area when I was 10 years old and joined the Memphis Jr. RiverKings (later changed to the Memphis Blues). I later played for my high school hockey team (Houston High School, Germantown, TN) and had the chance to play in 2 TN State Championship games, winning the second and winning the "Points Leader" award for the state of Tennessee.
I went on to play 2 season for the DIII club team at Middle Tennessee State University, but due to injury was forced to leave the game as a player.
I am very excited to be back in the Memphis area and have the opportunity to not only help start, but coach the club team at the University of Memphis. This blog will be a way for the already amazing fans and future fans to connect to not only myself, but other members of the team. Check back weekly as I keep everyone up to date on our recruiting, training, and much more. Thank you for your support and Go Tigers!
Full support for you and your TIGER HOCKEY TEAM!
